PM Modi, Macron discuss strategic partnership, global affairs, and terrorism in France
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties between India and France. After PM Modi’s two-day visit to France, both leaders issued a joint statement highlighting their discussions on various global and bilateral issues. They praised the progress made in their strategic partnership and pledged to work together in different sectors.
Key areas of Discussion
During their talks, the two leaders covered a wide range of topics. They discussed the Indo-Pacific region, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, and global security concerns. They also talked about cooperation in defence, nuclear energy, space exploration, and technology innovation. India and France aim to expand their collaboration in these fields, especially after the AI Action Summit and ahead of the India-France Year of Innovation in 2026.
Another focus of their discussion was economic cooperation. Both leaders reviewed trade and investment ties and welcomed the recommendations of the 14th India-France CEOs Forum. Strengthening economic relations remains a key priority for both countries.
PM Modi and President Macron also addressed the importance of multilateral engagement. They stressed the need for United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reforms and closer coordination in international forums. France reaffirmed its support for India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UNSC.

Strengthening defence and security ties
Defence cooperation between India and France has been growing significantly. Both leaders acknowledged the success of the Scorpene submarine project and progress in integrating advanced technology into India’s naval capabilities. They discussed possible collaborations in missile systems, helicopter engines, and jet engines.
PM Modi invited the French Army to explore the Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher System, emphasizing its potential for future Indo-French defence ties. President Macron also welcomed India's inclusion as an observer in the Eurodrone MALE program, which marks another milestone in defence cooperation.
In addition to defence, security was a crucial topic. Both leaders condemned cross-border terrorism and emphasized the need to dismantle terror financing networks. They stressed that no country should provide shelter to those involved in terrorism and called for strong action against terrorist organizations designated by the UN Security Council.
PM Modi and President Macron discussed key international issues, including conflicts in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war. They agreed to work closely on diplomatic efforts for global stability. Their talks also emphasized maintaining a free, open, inclusive, and peaceful Indo-Pacific region.
Both leaders underscored their shared responsibility in combating financial crimes linked to terrorism. They pledged to work together through platforms like the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and the No Money For Terror initiative.
PM Modi’s visit to France strengthened the deep-rooted ties between the two nations. Their discussions set the stage for future collaborations in defence, trade, technology, and global security.
